The Tower of Babel; the Line of Seth |
The first chapters of Genesis contain stories that are well known to everyone: the creation account, the fall of Adam and Eve, Cain killing Abel, Noah’s Ark and the tower of Babel. But besides being exciting stories, they also teach us about the nature of God and the nature of humanity. In beginning of Genesis presents a pattern of mankind’s sin followed by God’s judgment and grace. This serves as a prologue for the history of the nation of Israel and points to our need for Christ.
Genesis chapters 1-11 is a historical narrative that teaches us about the nature of God, His creation and humanity. One aspect of a narrative is the selectivity of the details that are taught. The details chosen are those relevant to the theological truths being taught. There may be additional information that we would like to learn about that the narrative does not fully reveal.
The beginning chapters of Genesis do touch on a number of difficult and sometimes controversial topics. Generally these are secondary to the primary theological truths being taught. Discussion of these topics will focus on understanding the differing views rather than arguing against opposing positions. And this discussion should not obscure the main truths of the passage.
